Enjoy a trip to Muynak from Nukus to explore the pre-Aral Sea area and Muynak, the city that used to be a rich and prosperous seaport back in the day.
Nowadays, Muynak is slowly evolving again, with the government's help and new manufacturing - baked & smoked river fish. We strongly suggest you try it out - the taste is gentle and delicious.
During this excursion to Muynak, you will visit the sea coast, regional sites, such as the ancient necropolis Mizdakhan and Gaur-Kala, a medieval fort built to protect Zoroastrians, also known as a famous sacred place.
Duration: 7-8 hours;
09:00 Meet the driver and guide at the airport or Nukus hotel.
Drive to Muynak (200 km ~3 hours drive).
Arrival in Muynak town, which used to be one of the richest towns in the delta of Amu-darya, a former port city and fish canning center, "the gates to Uzbekistan from the sea". Visit the "cemetery" of ships (wrecks of ships at the bottom of the former sea) and the local history museum.
Visit the Mizdakhan necropolis on the way back to Nukus (about 20 km from Nukus), an ancient cemetery located next to the remains of the Gyaur-Kala fortress (4th-3rd century BC).
- Gaur Kala (translated as the fortress of pagans) was a Zoroastrian town with a citadel, a fire altar, and a large cemetery nearby. Even after the Arab invasion and Islamic expansion, the town was inhabited until the 14th century, and people continued to bury their relatives in Mizdakhan as they believed the place was a sacred place.
