Gyaur-kala settlement

Gyaur-kala settlement that means “castle of unfaithfuls” (IV century B.C) is located near Khodjeily city, not far from necropolis Mizdahkan. The ruins of two citadels are surrounde by the powerful walls. It is supposed that one of them performed the function of the protective structure and temple. The other one was surrounded by a large courtyard and dwellings, decorated with beautiful paintings.
According to scientists, the city was inhabited by the Zoroastrians. It is not surprising because Khorezm is the center of origin of Zoroastrianism and the birthplace of the sacred Avesta. Up to 782 residents Gyaur Kala fought for their independence, but in the XIII century the city was destroyed by the Mongol-Tatar army. And only powerful walls of the massive square bricks with sides of 33 cm to 40 cm and a thickness of 9-10 cm, are evidenced that once there used to be a city.
During the archaeological excavations there were found not only residential buildings, but also various workshops for the manufacture of ceramics, iron products and wine shops. As Gayur Kala is the highest hill in the area, one can see surrounding sights for many kilometers. Ancient settlement Gyaur-Kala has many legends and mysteries which cause interest among the tourists, and its ruins are reminded about the times of prosperity of ancient Khorezm.
